Is there a big difference between men's and women's snowboard gear?
My girlfriend is getting all new gear this season. She wants to give me her old gear including her old snowboard. The length seems to be correct and the board is supposed to be a good one. Is there a big difference between men's and women's snowboard gear?
What about jackets and pants? She is also giving them to me. They look good and are not really girly. I especially love the pants because the inseam and waist are just right.
Would anybody care if the gear had logos on it such as a roxy logo?
There are some differences, but depending on many different factors, you may find that you like the gear just as much.
For instance, some manufacturers will adjust the slope/angle of the back of the boot because women's calves tend to start lower on the leg than men's do, hence they may get uncomfortable pressure on the calf muscle in a men's boot because the back is higher. But not all women's legs are the same, and neither are men's, so you may find the boot works just fine for you. The boards generally run slightly less stiff because of the weight to power ratio, but again, some women are very strong and can handle a stiffer board. Some boards are also built thinner in the mid-section because women's shoe sizes run smaller. But all these are generalizations, and you need to look at the specific equipment, and then see how your height/weight/style of riding will work with that equipment.
Obviously, there are other differences in the gear. You can check each manufacturer's specs to get an idea of what they are doing. Burton especially has a women's line that they are trying to design to accommodate for women riders.
When the companies are designing their products they are generally designing them with an end-user in mind. For example, board lengths generally come in a range that will fit a high percentage of the population. If you're very tall or very heavy, there are less boards to choose from. Same with jackets and pants. Very heavy (or highly muscled) people have a harder time finding things that fit them well.
I'm a woman and all my equipment and clothing came from the men's side of things--because that is what fit me and what works for me. I've never had anybody even mention anything about it while I was on the slopes. If the equipment fits you and you are happy with it, then you'll have a great time riding this year, and it doesn't matter if it was women's or men's.
