Ski/Snowboard Helmets - 7 Hints to get a Child to Wear Them
As adults we all know that ski/snowboard helmets should be part of everyone's gear on the mountain. We know that crashing is a part of the sport and that improveyou're going to have to take some risks and take some falls. Hopefully, using the correct protective gear including ski/snowboard helmets, those falls will only result in bumps and sore muscles. So how do we get children to wear the helmets we know that they should be wearing? Not just wear, but keep on all day? Here's a number of ideas that will help keep their noggins protected.
- Be an Example. Wear a helmet yourself when you're on the slopes. Make a helmet part of your very own gear.
- Let your little ones decide. Let your young children help pick out their helmets. What is awesome to you, might not be awesome to a 10-year-old.
- Cool Factor. Let them dress up their personal helmets with stickers or helmet covers to make them their own.
- Comfort. Make certain it fits well and is comfy. A helmet that's uncomfortable, too hot, too cold, pinches, is too heavy, is going to get "lost" swiftly.
- Use the Pros. Is their a skier or boarder your child admires? A person they know from the mountain or a celebrity? Shaun White always wears a helmet, right?
- Make an Impression. This is kind of gross, but young children like gross and its extremely graphic and really can make an impression. Take a cantaloupe, a child and a ladder. Have the child climb a number of rungs on the ladder and drop the cantaloupe on a hard surface. Yuck. Do the same with the cantaloupe in a helmet. Hmmm. See the difference. Wonderful discussion point while you are cleaning up the mess together!
- No Helmet, No Snow. Sometimes putting your foot down and taking away a day on the mountain tends to make the point you can't make any other way.
Ski/Snowboard helmets provide extra protection on the slopes for all ages, but they aren't the only way to stay safe. The greatest precautions are to learn your sport well and to ride and ski aware and in control.
