What Ski and Binding Combo Should i Buy?
What kind of Snow Skis, boots and bindings should i buy. I have snowboarded for many years but want to start skiing. I am a beginner on skis i have only skied once with rental gear and i was successful. i am 6ft 2in 285lbs i have a very large size 16 feet, i say i am a beginner but i am actually pretty decent, but i have only done it once. Let me know what you think. Expert advice is appreciated as this will be a serious investment for me. Thank you!
Uh oh. With feet that big you may have a hard time finding boots.
Lets go through the motions.
Skis:
You're going to want a pair of beginner all-mountain skis, is a twin-tip ski something you want? Check out skis with a side cut of around 85-95, and a stiff ski. Not too stiff. I'd suggest getting a twin tip ski, it will allow you to venture into the park, something you probably want to do being a snowboarder.
Suggestions:
K2 Silencer
**179 PMGear BRO Model (Stiff)** (Personal choice)
Salomon Lord
Moment Tahoe
Keep in mind that there are many more choices, those are some examples that I am familiar with which would fit the bill. My suggestion is to talk to shop techs about the best ski for what you want to do, and also to go to a local demo day at a ski hill close-by and demo some skis. Find some that work for you.
Bindings:
Whatever works. You'll want to grab one with a max DIN of at least 14 or 16, you're a big guy and don't want to prerelease. DON'T GET MARKERS. Go with Salomon (Atomics are the same), Rossignol (Dynastar, Look are the same), anything but Marker. My suggestion is the Rossignol FKS180 (Look Pivot 18)
Boots:
Now, the most important weapon in your arsenal.
Boots are the single most important gear you have. Bad fit, bad skiing and sore feet. GO TO A QUALIFIED BOOT FITTER. Talk to him about what you need, tell him what and where you'll be skiing, and what you expect in a boot. Don't skimp on a boot, get the ones that fit best. That said, boots should run you around 150-200$. DO NOT BUY USED OR ONLINE. If you buy them in a store the store will most often fit them for free, something that you will need to do and will be costly if you buy online. Secondhand boots have been packed out and are fitted to another foot. Not a good idea.
