What ski boot should I get? Help!!?
I am having so much trouble choosing a ski boot. I have been in a Nordica Beast and it feels big and sloppy. I am 5'2" but weigh about 130 lbs. I teach skiing and want a boot that reacts. However, I have a size 22 D foot? Is it better to go tight like the Nordica Doberman and blow out the width or go for an Atomic or lower end boot with more volume?? What would be a good not too stiff and racy but high end boot for a wide flat foot in a 22?
Go to your local ski shop and ask for the top boot fitter. Forget trying to get anyone brand or the price or the "best deal". If you are teaching, expect to be in your boots 4-8 hours a day and they must fit tight but not be painful. When you take them off your feet should say "let's go dancing" not "I can't move." You also need a set of foot beds, and get checked for cants and ramp or delta. I ski best with a flat binding/ boot platform. Any heel rise gets to be a problem. You do not mention where you are located, but there are many good fitters nationwide. I'm in Seattle and deal with Custom Boot Service for the final fitting. Alpine Hut is my preferred shop, and Sturtevant's is very good.
My boots were blown out for the 6th toe, cut down and straightened, also the flex was softened and the achilles tunnel ground out. The stock liners were padded and trimmed and after that, I can wear them for 6-8 hours and still go dancing. The proper fitting boot is critical, a race boot is not designed to teach in. Get a high end, professional boot, well worth the money and better for your skiing. A racer will need a tight boot for 2-5 minutes each run, unless you are racing all of the time, you do not need that tight a boot. A good tight fit properly balanced for you will give all of the precision you need and plenty of comfort. I do hope this helps. Sore feet are no fun.
